Spied: 2014 Dodge Challenger Supercharged

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and Chevy Camaro ZL1 were the most recent salvos launched in the pony car horsepower wars, and Chrysler Group is reportedly preparing to return fire with the rumored “Hellcat” engine. These latest spy shots might just show a Hellcat-equipped supercharged Dodge Challenger, as the prototype looks to have the brakes needed to slow down 600-plus hp.

The tester wears an unusual set of wheels as well as a non-production exhaust system, which could lead the casual observer to believe it’s a modified Challenger SRT8. However, a closer look at what’s behind those front wheels reveals larger brake calipers and rotors compared to the standard SRT8. The prototype’s brake rotors are cross-drilled, unlike the slotted rotors on the SRT model. The camo covering the front end could hide revised air inlets necessary to feed the car’s high-output powerplant.
As we’ve previously reported, that powerplant is rumored to be a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 producing as much as 640 hp. The Hellcat engine is said to be lighter and more compact than the Viper’s 8.4-liter V-10, and would likely be produced alongside the existing 6.4- and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8s. With SRT boss Ralph Gilles telling us in March that the upcoming Barracuda has been delayed, a high-powered Challenger could be just the thing to tide over Mopar fans.
