New Car: 2013 Volkswagen Kombi Last Edition

Volkswagen has announced one final hoorah for the infamous VW Kombi as its 56 years of uninterrupted production in Brazil comes to an end. The Kombi Last Edition will have a production run of only 600 units and go on sale later this month.

Due to the unique shape of the Kombi, its structure and characteristics do not fit the new safety legislation being introduced in Brazil next year.

The Kombi Last Edition will have a special two-tone white and blue paint-job, and each model will be fitted with a numbered plaque from 001 to 600 on the dashboard. Special design elements such as the whitewall tyres and tinted rear windows celebrate the various editions of the Kombi to come out of Brazil since 1957.
Inside, the seats and door panels get special vinyl upholstery to match that of the exterior, along with a set of privacy curtains. Modern touches such as iPod compatibility have also been added.

Powered by the water-cooled 68bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine introduced in 2005, it’s 34 per cent more powerful and 30 per cent more efficient than its air-cooled predecessor. When the Kombi was launched in 1957 it was initially fitted with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine producing only 28bhp.

After its 56 years of production in the São Bernardo do Campo plant in Brazil, more than 1,550,000 units of the Kombi were manufactured at the plant, giving it the longest history of longevity in the automotive industry. For more details click here.
