Spied: 2014 Opel/Vauxhall Adam OPC/VXR

Although the Opel/Vauxhall brands are struggling, General Motors is investing heavily to revitalize its European brands, which include an investment in entry-level motorsports with an Adam rally car and an Astra OPC cup car. New spy shots suggest the automaker is also working on a performance-oriented Adam OPC hatchback for the street.

The mildly camouflaged Opel Adam OPC prototype sports several changes from the standard car currently on sale. Up front, a new lower air intake has been added below the license plate, while the partially disguised headlights suggest a lighting upgrade. New five-spoke wheels with five bolts suggest more power under hood as do the blue OPC brake calipers similar to those of the Corsa OPC model. A sports suspension lowers the ride height.
While the Adam OPC rally car makes 185 hp from a turbocharged 1.6-liter I-4, powertrain details haven’t been revealed for the Adam OPC, but expect more power than the current car’s 70-hp 1.2-liter and 87-100-hp 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder engines. A 185 hp engine, however, would give the Adam OPC about the same power as a Mini Cooper S.

The automaker plans to add more power to the Opel Adam (similar in size to the Chevrolet Spark) as well as more variants such as the Adam Rocks concept shown at this year’s Geneva auto show. GM’s chief Dan Akerson also said he wants to bring the Opel Adam hatchback and Cascada convertible models to the U.S. as Buicks.
