Since returning to his namesake company, Steve Saleen has kept busy with new products such as the new Heritage Edition muscle cars shown earlier this year at Pebble Beach. Now, Saleen has confirmed that the specialty automaker is developing an electric vehicle.
"We recognize that
electric cars are a trend, not a fad and expect this vehicle category to
continue to increase as an automotive option for consumers," said Steve
Saleen, in a release. "We intend to enter this market with an offering
that is truly innovative and offers the styling and craftsmanship
associated with the Saleen Automotive brand.
While no details have been revealed, more
information and scale models will be shown in early 2014. In keeping
with Saleen’s heritage, we suspect the new EV will be a sports car. An
EV sports car from Saleen could fill the void left by the Tesla Roadster's discontinuation. Earlier this year at Pebble Beach, Steve Saleen also confirmed that a successor to the Saleen S7 supercar is in the works. Such a car could look something like the S5S Raptor concept of 2008 (pictured above).
"I'm not prepared
to give all the details of our electric vehicle project yet, but I can
tell you that it is unlike anything currently in the marketplace," added
Saleen. "Throw out your pre-conceived notions and expectations. This
vehicle will be revolutionary in its aesthetics and mechanics. Stay
With a new supercar
and EV in the works, as well as the company’s bread-and-butter tuned
American muscle cars, we expect Saleen Automotive to remain busy for
some time -- especially since the firm will soon have the new 2015 Ford Mustang’s powertrains and suspension to toy with.
