New Concept Car: Volkswagen Taigun Update

VW has unveiled an updated version of the Taigun SUV concept at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The near-production concept has received several styling tweaks including a revised rear end, which sees the addition of an outside-mounted spare wheel.

Feedback from potential customers prompted VW into making the visual changes. Designers have also worked on the rear door handles, which now appear to be a part of the window design. LED spotlights have also been integrated into the roofrails.

Measuring in at 136mm longer than the original concept – thanks to the addition of the spare wheel – the Taigun is also 83mm wider and 81mm taller than the up! supermini it’s based on. The wheelbase has also been extended by 50mm over the up! with the kerbweight increasing by 69kg, totalling 998kg.

VW has likened the interior of the Taigun concept to a smart phone or tablet, with a minimalist dash and an integrated touchscreen with infotainment system. There’s also honeycomb style seating with contrasting orange stitching.

The concept features a new 109bhp 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine – first seen in the Up! GT – capable of 60mpg with emission of 110g/km. There’s no official word on what engines will be available from launch but the lineup from the up! is expected to be adopted.

We spoke to VW Chief Designer, Klaus Bischoff at the Shanghai Motor Show last year, where he revealed to Auto Express "It would be stupid to sell it in just South America. We are a global company and we brings cars to any market where there is the demand."

We can expect the mini SUV to arrive in the UK some time in 2016, pitched as an alternative to the Nissan Juke. Pricing should kick off at around £12,000. For more details click here.
