Beijing Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen has dropped slow-selling V8 and hybrid versions of its Touareg SUV as part of a range of revisions on show at the Beijing motor show.

Although V8 diesel and hybrid powertrains will no longer be offered, Volkswagen has retained the 201bhp 3.0-litre TDI and has boosted power for the 242bhp version to 254bhp.

Myriad revisions have been carred out to improve efficiency, including the fitment of low-rolling resistance tyres and stop-start and battery regeneration systems. Both engines are EU6 compliant thanks to a new catalytic converter option that uses AdBlue to reduce emissions.

Volkswagen claims that 201bhp versions return 42.8mpg on the combined cycle and emit 174g/km of CO2, while the 254bhp version records 41.5mpg and 178g/km.

The 2015 Touareg features larger Bi-Xenon headlights fitted across the range, a new larger grille and a reprofiled bumper. At the rear a new bumper and diffuser is fitted. Other additions include a new range of alloy wheel designs, paint colours and shades of leather upholstery.

All models are fitted with a post-collision braking system and a coasting function integrated into the standard-fit eight-speed automatic gearbox. The car’s optional adaptive cruise control also now includes a city braking function.

The facelifted Touareg will be available to order in the UK in August, with first deliveries expected in November.

Beijing Show 2014 Highlights: Audi TT Q Concept

The Audi TT offroader concept show car demonstrates that the TT can become a family of models, company boss Rupert Stadler revealed to Autocar.

Speaking at the Beijing motor show, Stadler admitted that the show car could point the way to Audi's sports car turning into a sub brand and hinted heavily that it could make production as the 'TT Q'.
"The TT can be a family," he said. "This concept shows that we can do it and long as the genetic code is kept".

Stadler explained that the 'genetic code' equals the TT's distinctive wheel arches, narrow side glass, rear lights and the distinctive interior – all present on the Chinese show concept car.

However he maintained that extensions to the TT family would not include a saloon or a bigger car. "The TT should be an icon and that icon has to be respected and that means a compact car that's sporty to drive." he said.

Beijing Show 2014 Highlights: Peugeot Exalt Concept

Peugeot could put the Exalt concept into production for the Chinese market, company boss Maxime Picat has revealed.

Speaking to Autocar at the Beijing motor show, Picat admitted that there was a need to make a large saloon for the Chinese market, as well as a larger SUV. Consequently a production version of the Exalt was a serious likelihood.

Product boss Xavier Peugeot confirmed the need to sell those cars in China but isn’t ruling them out for Europe either. "We don’t want to give up on saloons in Europe" he said "and it’s possible to sell the SUV across continents though it can’t be exactly the same product. Chinese customers need a larger boot and more space."
However he denied that he is trying to turn Peugeot into a more upmarket brand for the Chinese market. "We are not a luxury brand and our positioning should be no different in China than it is in Europe." he said. "It is not our first priority, we want to be the best generalist."

Picat also revealed that success for Peugeot in China will influence the direction of European models. "The next generation will be a worldwide influenced car," he said "Chinese customers don’t understand the concept of a crossover, so the next 3008 will have to look more like a traditional SUV in its exterior design."

Beijing Show 2014 Highlights: Citroen C-XR Concept

Citroën has revealed its new C-XR concept at the Beijing motor show.

Previewing the first production SUV to come from the joint venture between Citroën and Dongfeng, the concept is billed as "a contemporary take on the SUV".

The C-XR concept features traditional SUV styling, and includes a wide grille finished in chrome with large Citroën chevrons in the middle. Vertical LED lighting strips feature at either side, alongside a large lower air intake and rugged-looking front guard.

Roof rails run the length of the concept, while double exhaust tips feature at the rear. Body cladding is standard, adding a more rugged edge to the concept.

The car sits on 17-inch wheels with all-weather tyres. Citroën claims the C-XR's wheelbase is the longest in its class, at 2650mm, which should result in substantial interior space.

Citroën says the C-XR comes equipped with its selectable Grip Control technology, while power comes from the firm's THP 160 petrol engine. An automatic gearbox is standard, as is a stop-start system to improve efficiency.

The concept is likely to make production with only minor changes, becoming a rival to Peugeot's 2008. Reports suggest a production version will appear early next year.

Beijing Show 2014 Highlights: Lincoln MKX Concept

Ford has revealed a new Lincoln MKX concept car to coincide with the launch of its premium arm into China.

The new concept car previews a new global SUV based on the Ford Edge that's tipped to go into production within the next 18 months. It is the first time that Lincoln has revealed a concept car outside of North America.

Speaking ahead of the Beijing motor show, Ford boss Alan Mulally said he believed that Lincoln was "absolutely ready to take on the world’s largest car market". He also stated that Lincoln aimed to give better value and better service than other imported luxury brands.

The brand will start sales with two US-built models: the MKZ saloon, based on the next-generation Ford Mondeo, and the MKC SUV. The range will grow to include larger SUVs, including a production version of the MKC, and the all-new Lincoln Navigator in 2016.

Mulally wouldn’t reveal sales targets for Lincoln in China, though Ford is expected to sell more than one million cars in the market in 2014.

Ford’s sales and marketing boss, Jim Farley, refused to give sales targets for Lincoln, but revealed that the cars would be sold in a different, "more personalised" way than other luxury brands.

Lincoln took the unprecedented step of building a prototype dealership in Shanghai three years ago in order to research and test customer preferences.

Beijing Show 2014 Highlights: Nissan Lannia Concept

Nissan has unveiled its Lannia concept saloon, aimed at "Post-80s trendsetters", at the Beijing motor show.

The new concept is the result of collaboration between Nissan Design China and the Nissan Global Design Centre.

Nissan's product boss, Andy Palmer, said: "It joins our growing family of China-focused models."
Myriad design features are shared with previous Nissan concepts and current production models, including the prominent grille.

Its distinctive modern looks are hoped to appeal to younger buyers, the number of which is rapidly growing in China.

Taiji Toyota, head of Nissan Design China, says the Lannia Concept exudes “daqi” – a term that suggests upmarket aspirations
The Chinese name of the concept, "lan niao yin xiang", is stated to pay tribute to the well-recognised Nissan Bluebird; it reputedly translates as "Bluebird impression".

It was also announced that the Nismo's high-performance variants will be officially offered in China, starting with the GT-R Nismo and the 370Z Nismo.

The Giveaway

One person will get to drive home from the annual AmericanMuscle Car Show—the largest Mustang only car show on the planet—in their newly acquired magazine cover car—Project MMD. Not only is this Muscle Mustangs and Fast Ford’s (MM & FF) May 2014 Cover Car, it’s also the same build that was featured at Forgestar’s booth for the 2013 SEMA Auto Show. The winner will be selected on 8/4/2014 and will be handed the keys at the AmericanMuscle car show on 8/16/2014.
Video: How Project MMD was built -

The Car - SEMA 2014

Sometimes you plan out an entire build before you ever pick up a wrench—this was not how Project MMD began. This car started out as a way to showcase some of MMD’s most popular modifications, but once the opportunity to showcase a car at the 2013 SEMA Auto Show came along, the guys at MMD went back to the drawing board. They commissioned AmericanMuscle to handle the performance aspects of the car while they gave it an appearance overhaul. The end result was a successful appearance at Forgestar’s SEMA booth and a few neck snapping trips in Las Vegas and the surrounding countryside.

Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Cover Car – May 2014

Project MMD was designed and built to be a SEMA car, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a fully functional street machine—the guys at MMD actually drive it around town and to shows. That’s what pegged the interest of the crew over at MM & FF and once they finally saw Project MMD in person at SEMA, they knew they were looking at a cover car.

Project MMD – Styling

What began as your run-of-the-mill 2014 Oxford White Premium GT received the perfect synergy of classically inspired styling mixed with a bold, attention demanding modern twist. The car takes inspiration from the late ‘60s Mustangs, such as the GT350 style spoiler and hood scoop. It also employs more recent aesthetics such as a matte white vinyl wrap and an adjustable air ride suspension that lets you drop the car to the ground when parked or at a show, all while still delivering the performance of coil overs. With the fog light deletes, page was taken from the BOSS 302’s playbook, along with the matte black roof decal.
Of the more modern styling, the MMD windshield and side decals offer a stark color contrast while the matte while tail light covers make for a more fluent paint scheme. The rear diffuser is an MMD prototype developed for this car and accounts well for the Ford Racing exhaust dumps.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Nissan Versa Sedan

If you’ve paid attention to this space, you’re probably aware of our opinion of Nissan’s sad-sack Versa. It’s no secret that we’re not fans of the little sedan—which was recently joined by a marginally better hatchback iteration, known as the Note

Since being introduced in 2012, the current Versa has earned a spot on our 10 Cheapest New Cars Sold in America for 2014 (cheapest!) list, and it finished so distant a sixth place in a 2011 six-car comparison test it might as well have placed seventh. Or eighth. Nissan could do just about anything to the Versa sedan and have a shot at improving it, and the automaker’s 2015 update does indeed see some things changed.

Nissan says the Versa’s restyled front and rear fascias were influenced by those of the larger Sentra and Altima sedans, although we see more of the ho-hum Sentra than the better-looking Altima here. Regardless, sticking a chrome grille, the Sentra’s boomerang-shaped headlights, and a more-tailored rear bumper on the Versa’s lumpy shape doesn’t do much to improve its looks.

Inside, Nissan subtly re-contoured the center-stack shape, added a nifty little plastic hood above the central air vents, and painted the climate controls black. For 2015, the Versa’s four trim levels—S, S Plus, SV, and SL—carry over, but Bluetooth connectivity, steering-wheel audio controls, and white LED gauge-cluster lighting are newly standard across the range. The SL Technology package now includes the NissanConnect navigation system with mobile apps, and 15-inch wheels borrowed from the sporty-ish Versa Note SR are optional as well. On the opposite end of Versaland, it’s telling that a radio, assist grips, and a passenger vanity mirror are still called out as standard features on the baser-than-base Versa S. Oh, before we forget, there is also new seat fabric.

Buyers of the 2015 Versa can look forward to—if that’s the right phrase—the same grainy, unsatisfying 1.6-liter four from before. It puts out 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque, and strains against the pavement via a five-speed manual, a four-speed automatic (optional on base S models only), or a CVT automatic that’s standard on S Plus, SV, and SL models. The best performance-related thing we can say about the last Versa sedan we tested is that it made it to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds. Fuel economy is still a Versa strong suit, with EPA ratings of 31 mpg city and 40 mpg highway on CVT-equipped models. A big back seat is still part of the equation, and remains the car’s main boast-worthy feature.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but we doubt Nissan will cede its coveted “least-expensive new car in America” title to another manufacturer. So don’t expect big increases from the current model’s base price range of $12,800 to $17,700.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Nissan Murano

Nissan’s “Innovation that Excites” marketing tagline often falls a bit flat—we’re still searching for any excitement or innovation in the Versa or Sentra, for example—but in the case of the 2015 Murano, it’s right on the money. Whether or not you think the Murano is attractive, its design certainly couldn’t be called derivative or boring. This is a design that busts the mid-size crossover segment wide open like the Kool-Aid man bursting through a wall. Heck, we think the design of the production crossover looks even more expressive than that of the Resonance concept on which it is based, which doesn’t happen often.

The 2015 Murano’s look might seem extreme, but the nameplate has a history of envelope-pushing design dating back to the first-generation model introduced for 2003. With its high-style-on-a-budget mission statement, the Murano’s long been positioned as the semi-luxurious choice in the mid-size crossover segment, straddling the line between mainstream offerings such as the Ford Edge, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander, and edgier entries like the Acura RDX and Infiniti QX50. Without a drop of irony, Nissan calls the two-row, five-passenger Murano its “flagship crossover,” essentially relegating the larger three-row Pathfinder to pedestrian family hauler duty.

Relative to today’s soft-edged Murano, the 2015 model exhibits a far more aggressive countenance. The Murano’s V-shaped front end, boomerang-shaped headlights and taillights, and robust fender sculpturing carry over nearly verbatim from the sporty Resonance concept. Most surprisingly, the show car’s rear quarter panel “hump” that reaches for the corner of the roof panel survived the design’s evolution to production. A cleverly placed blackout trim piece covers each D-pillar and gives the impression of a floating roof supported by a thin wand of glass extending from the front windows on back.

Nissan added 2.5 inches of length and 1.3 inches of width, and also shaved some height to make the 2015 Murano appear lower and wider, and it pays off. This is an athletic-looking design, especially in profile, and we like the crossover’s aggressive stance. It stands apart from the crowd—which is no small feat in the typically milquetoast mid-size crossover arena. And the amped-up style doesn’t come at the expense of passenger space, which is roughly equivalent to that of the previous generation. Rear legroom increases by 2.4 inches, while headroom, hip room, and shoulder room don’t change appreciably.

We’re fairly certain, however, that the interior’s minor dimensional tweaks will garner less attention than the exterior. Nissan calls the cabin’s appearance “lounge-like,” but we think it’s more womb-like. Every surface is rounded and conveys a warm, enveloping feeling—especially cuddly when the light-hued Cashmere color scheme is specified.

Underneath the Murano’s designer duds lies a fairly run-of-the-mill chassis. Nissan again utilizes a front strut, rear multi-link independent suspension setup, and front-drive is standard with all-wheel drive remaining optional. Every Murano is powered by a carry-over 3.5-liter V-6 engine making 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, and Nissan’s JATCO-supplied Xtronic CVT is the only transmission choice. While the V-6 should be sufficient, we’re a bit disappointed Nissan didn’t squeeze more power out of it; 260 ponies isn’t a lot of output for a 3.5-liter, especially in the face of similarly powerful—but more efficient, at least to the EPA—turbo fours from competitors.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Infiniti QX80

One of the key appeals of traditional full-size SUVs is that they provide a spacious container for packing a vast array of luxury goodies many buyers like to keep close at hand. Formerly known as the QX56, the full-size QX80 is Infiniti’s full-size body-on-frame traditionalist that’s a little bigger (and heavier) than a Chevy Tahoe. The exterior dimensions don’t change for 2015, nor do the underpinnings or the powertrain—a robust 5.6-liter V-8 (400 horsepower, 413 lb-ft of torque) and seven-speed automatic transmission driving either the rear or, optionally, all four wheels.

But the 2015 model will definitely look different, with new front and rear fascias, new wheel designs (including a new 22-inch forged-aluminum version), three new exterior colors, and a number of interior refinements.

Infiniti cites the Q50 sedan as the inspiration for the new front end, which includes a redesigned upper grille and adds a lower grille opening. The headlights and fog lights are all LED, as are the turn signals, and the new front bumper incorporates sonar sensors for the adaptive cruise control and forward collision-alert system.

Inside, the redesigned cabin sports new trim elements, a comprehensive range of standard features—premium audio, navigation, leather upholstery, a sunroof, a new auto high- and low-beam feature—and two revised option packages: Driver Assistance and Deluxe Technology. The latter includes elements you might expect, such as a 15-speaker Bose surround-sound system, new Stratford Burl trim, and adaptive front lighting, plus something you might not—a climate-control system with auto recirculation, a Plasmacluster air purifier, and a grape polyphenol filter.

While a loaded QX80 is unquestionably posh, Infiniti market research shows that the appetite for luxury features is almost insatiable, which has inspired an even higher-lux trim level for 2015: the QX80 Limited.

Exterior differentiators include dark-finish headlight lenses, tinted rear lamps, and pool lighting beneath brushed-finish running boards. Exterior chrome trim has a dark finish, as do the standard 22-inch wheels, and there are three new colors exclusive to the Limited model. The main color of the seven-passenger interior is a shade Infiniti calls Truffle Brown, the ash wood trim is specific to the Limited, and the overall effect, according to Infiniti Americas president Michael Bartsch, is “decidedly masculine, what might be unapologetically described as a mobile man cave.” In addition to its specific trim touches, the Limited will also include the contents of all the QX80 option packages: Driver Assistance, Deluxe Technology, and Theater.

Introduced at the New York show, the updated QX80 will be on sale in the fourth quarter of 2014 as a 2015 model.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Ford Focus Sedan

Ford is determined to soak up every last ray of spotlight available during the protracted 2015 Focus debut. Revealed in hatchback and wagon trims at Geneva earlier this year, the maker saved the global premiere of the Focus sedan for the bright lights of New York City. True, the New York auto show doesn’t officially begin for a week or so, but makers have grown fond of stringing reveals out in an attempt to capture as much attention as possible.

Aside from the obvious differences—it’s got a more steeply raked backlight and trunk instead of a hatch—the Focus sedan falls right in line with its refreshed five-door counterpart. (The Focus wagon variant isn’t scheduled to make the trip to the U.S. anytime soon.)

The big news is the arrival of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine mated to a manual six-speed transmission that we’ve already driven in a Euro-spec Focus. Currently available in the U.S.-market Fiesta, the 1.0-liter Focus will come standard with a fuel-saving stop-start system. To address driving dynamics, which we think were already good, the rear suspension setup on all 2015 Focus models receives a tweaking, and the electric power steering has been retuned. Ford claims shock absorbers with a new valve design help improve interior quietness.

The 2015 model also marks the arrival of an SE Sport package trim, which includes new body treatments, paddle shifters (when equipped with an automatic transmission), a revised touring suspension, and 17-inch gloss-black aluminum wheels wrapped in P215/50 tires.

Exterior updates include fresh styling for the hood, grille, and trunklid, and signature LED lighting arrives for both the headlamps and taillamps. The interior gets a new center console with improved storage capacity and adjustable cupholders (Big Gulpers rejoice!), new seat trims, satin chrome detailing, and an available heated steering wheel. Ford is also getting a leg up on the approaching 2018 backup-camera mandate by making a backup camera standard across the Focus lineup for 2015.

Images from the camera will appear on a dash-mounted 4.2-inch screen; customers who spring for the optional MyFord Touch system will get upgraded to an eight-inch display as part of the deal. Also making its first appearance on the standard side of the order sheet of all trim levels is Ford’s MyKey programmable vehicle settings.

Safety nanny systems such as blind-spot warning and a lane-keeping system will also be optional, the latter incorporating an active steering-correct function that applies steering to center the car in its lane if initial warnings go unheeded. To help keep things quiet inside, Ford specified thicker carpets and window glass, and improved engine-compartment insulation.

Final EPA fuel-economy numbers for the 1.0-liter EcoBoost aren’t in yet, but Ford isn’t shy about its hopes, stating that it “expects the 1.0-liter EcoBoost Focus to raise the bar in fuel efficiency among non-hybrid compact vehicles.” We’ll let you know how that works out, as soon as we put one through an instrumented test.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

The new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG coupe has made its public debut at the New York motor show. The hot version of the S-class coupe will go on sale in the UK in November at an estimated price of approximately £100,000.

The plush four-seater replaces the CL63 AMG at the upper end of the Mercedes-Benz line-up, where it aims to provide stiff competition for the Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin Rapide.

Power for the hot new coupé comes from AMG’s twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine. With 577bhp at 5500rpm, the direct-injection petrol unit kicks out 40bhp more than the similarly configured engine used by the CL63 AMG. Torque remains the same as before, with a peak of 663lb ft at 2250rpm.

The heady reserves are channelled through a standard seven-speed AMG Speedshift automatic gearbox. As with the recently introduced S63 AMG saloon, buyers can now choose between standard rear-wheel drive and optional 4Matic four-wheel drive.

Mercedes-Benz claims a 65kg reduction in overall weight over the old CL63 AMG, both for the rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive S63 AMG coupés, which are claimed to weigh the same 1995kg.

The identical weight is down to differing underpinnings. The rear-drive car has as standard AirMatic air suspension with optional corner tilt function, whereas the four-wheel-drive version receives a more conventional and lighter steel-sprung suspension.

The rear-drive S63 AMG coupé is claimed to hit 62mph from standstill in 4.3sec and return 28.0mpg. The S63 AMG coupé 4Matic can crack 0-62mph in 3.9sec and is rated at 27.4mpg. Each model has a top speed limited to 155mph.

As well as air suspension, the rear-wheel-drive S63 AMG coupé comes with Mercedes-Benz’s so-called Magic Body Control system. This consists of a number of different functions, including the road surface scanner and active body control system available on the S63 AMG saloon.

In a first for the S63 AMG coupé, buyers can also add the German car maker’s new cornering tilt function, which automatically inclines the body by up to 2.5deg at speeds between 19mph and 112mph.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept

Land Rover has revealed the future of its expanded Discovery range with a versatile and technology-packed SUV concept at the New York motor show.

The Discovery Vision Concept heralds a range of initially four SUV models that will wear the Discovery badge, taking the 25-year-old nameplate to a whole family of ‘leisure’ vehicles in the same way that Land Rover has with Range Rover and Defender.

The new concept car establishes the design themes, versatile, high-tech interiors and off-road prowess of the Discovery family. It also previews a whole raft of advanced technology that’s set to come from Jaguar Land Rover in the coming years, including the ability to control the car remotely.

“The Discovery concept vehicle represents a vision of our future family of leisure SUVs,” said Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern. “Its modern, relevant and compelling design is a significant shift from Discovery as we know it. Vision puts design at the core, design which resonates on an emotional level.

"It has beautiful proportions, it's poised, it has a strong stance as all Land Rovers do. It's versatile inside and out and can be associated with lots of different lifestyles.

The first Land Rover model to wear the Discovery name in the next generation of vehicles will be a replacement for the current five-seat Freelander. It is due to be seen before the year is out and is based on the Range Rover Evoque platform. There will also be a seven-seat Freelander replacement.
The staple Discovery model and a new addition to the line-up will be a rugged seven-seat off-roader in the mould of Toyota’s Land Cruiser. This will be a sister car to Jaguar’s upcoming SUV and a new Range Rover model that will slot between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport.

Crowning the range will be a direct replacement for the current Discovery, but with an even plusher and more premium execution. It is this model — built on the all-aluminium structure that underpins the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport — that the Discovery Vision Concept most closely previews.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Kia Sedona

The new Kia Sedona has been revealed at the New York motor show today.

With seating for up to eight, Kia says the new MPV represents the "final chapter" of its brand redesign under design boss Peter Schreyer. As such, the new Sedona gets Kia's larger, more prominent corporate front-end with a "European-inspired" design.

The new Sedona is 1.6-inches longer than its predecessor, and sits on 19-inch alloy wheels. Kia says it has given the Sedona a muscular design at the front, enhanced by the new roof-mounted spoiler at the rear.

Inside, the Sedona is available in seven or eight-seat guises. Usual MPV storage solutions, including removable slide-forward seats and a centre-console storage space feature, alongside retractable lower leg rests in the second row of seats.

As well as soft-touch furnishings, Kia says it has also given the Sedona new anti-bacterial and anti-static fabrics in the cabin. The top-level SXL trim also features Nappa leather trim
Kia says the new Sedona is the first car to offer its next-generation UVO infotainment and telematics system. As well as applications for navigation and music, the system also handles Siri 'Eyes Free' technology for iPhones.

The new Sedona sits on an all-new chassis, made from 76 per cent high-strength steel, alongside a suspension set-up which Kia says should improve its ride and handling.

Powering the MPV is a 3.3-litre V6 engine, replacing the current 3.5-litre V6, and the same unit found in the Sorento and Cadenza models. That engine has 272bhp and 248lb ft of torque, and comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The new Sedona is scheduled to go on sale in the US by the fourth quarter of this year, with pricing announced closer to its launch date. Kia has confirmed the new model won't be coming to Europe.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 BMW M4 Convertible

BMW’s new 425bhp M4 convertible has been revealed at the New York motor show today.
Set to go on sale in the UK in September, the four-seat open-top is the third in a new generation of turbocharged six-cylinder powered M division models, following on from the M3 saloon and M4 coupé shown at the Detroit motor show back in January.

The new M4 convertible will be priced from £60,730, close to that of its predecessor, the M3 cabriolet, which was pitched at £59,040 prior to the end of production late last year.

The basis for the latest M4 is the recently introduced 4-series convertible. The new car receives a series of traditional styling changes, including a more heavily structured front bumper with larger cooling ducts for the engine and front brakes, altered kidney grille treatment, more heavily contoured bonnet, wider front fenders with integrated air breather elements to smooth airflow through the front wheel houses, new exterior mirror housings, wider rear fenders and a lower rear bumper with four round chromed tailpipes. The car rides on 19-inch alloy wheels in the UK.

At 4670mm in length, 1870mm in width and 1386mm in height, the new car is 56mm longer, 65mm wider and a scant 4mm lower than its predecessor. It also rides on a larger chassis whose 2812mm wheelbase and 1579mm front and 1693mm rear tracks are up by respective 52mm, 39mm and 63mm.
The three-piece metal roof opens automatically at the press of a button, taking 20sec to fold and stow behind the rear seats at speeds up to 11mph. Nominal boot capacity is put at 370 litres with the roof in place and 220 litres with it folded down – figures which represent a respective 20 litre and 10 litre increase on the M3 cabriolet.

Inside, M-specific upgrades include heated sports seats, an M steering wheel, and new chrome trim. In the UK, additional specification will include BMW's Professional media package, upgraded Bluetooth and USB functionality, front and rear parking sensors and folding mirrors.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 BMW X4

The new BMW X4 has been revealed at the New York motor show today. The model described by the German manufacturer as being based on the X3, but with refined driving dynamics to place it “on another level”.

Set to become BMW’s fifth dedicated SUV model, the five-seat X4 was first previewed in concept car form at last year’s Shanghai motor show. The junior sibling to the strong-selling X6 is planned to go on sale in the UK in July.

At launch, the new X4 will be available in diesel form only with prices starting from £36,590 for the xDrive20d SE, rising to £44,890 for the xDrive30d xLine and on to £48,990 for the range-topping xDrive35d in M Sport trim.

Buoyed by the success of the X6, BMW is looking towards the smaller and more affordable X4 to appeal to an increasing number of buyers seeking the sporting traits of a traditional performance estate together with the everyday versatility of a high-riding SUV.

Key among the rivals for the new BMW is the recently introduced Porsche Macan and Range Rover Evoque – the former of which has generated a remarkable 50,000 sales worldwide, a total corresponding to its planned first year of production, before even reaching showrooms.

As hinted to by the earlier Concept X4, the appearance of BMW’s latest SUV has been heavily influenced by that of the X6. The two share the same basic silhouette and five-door liftback layout, although their respective mechanical packages differ. The X4 shares its underpinnings with the X3, while the X6, which is due to be replaced by a new second-generation model later this year, is based on the X5.

Styled under Karim Habib, head of BMW brand design, the X4 also shares various front-end styling elements with the recently facelifted X3, including the shape of its LED headlamps.

However, a deeper and more heavily structured bumper, boasting larger cooling ducts along with a new kidney grille and a more contoured bonnet serve to give it a more instantly aggressive air.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Toyota Camry

Only three years into the model cycle, Toyota revealed a dramatically refreshed Camry saloon at the New York motor show.

With strong competition from the Ford Fusion – the domestic version of the Mondeo – and others in the USA, Toyota needed to up its game with the Camry. Hyundai’s reveal of the latest Sonata in New York adds to the need for this update by Toyota.

Toyota sold 408,000 Camry models in American in 2013. If the Camry was its own brand, it would crack into the top 10 selling makes in the States. It’s clear the Camry is a very important car for the Japanese company.

All the exterior panels bar the roof have been changed on the 2015 Camry and there are nearly 2000 new parts. The chassis is reinforced with new spot welds, improving rigidity.

The suspension has also been fully retuned and the track is slightly wider, by 10mm. Toyota claims that the new aggressive grill is "all about attitude", while LED headlights are now offered to further improve its looks.

Inside, a new centre stack is fitted along with other enhancements and refinements. Toyota claims a large improvement in regards to wind and road noise. One unique option is an available wireless charging system for smartphones

Engine offerings are carried over. Two petrol engines – a 2.5-litre inline four and a 3.5-litre V6 – as well as a hybrid powertrain are available. Both conventional engines utilise a 6-speed automatic. The hybrid version features a CVT.

The refreshed 2015 Camry is built in America, in the state of Kentucky, and it goes on sale in autumn.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Mini Countryman

A revised version of the Mini Countryman has been revealed, complete with a subtle new look and improved fuel economy.

All-wheel-drive versions are the biggest beneficiaries of the styling changes, with flared side sills and revised front and rear bumpers hinting at the car’s more rugged nature. A more prominent hexagonal grille also lends extra presence to the new model.

The Cooper S model gets a small increase in power, from 182bhp to 188bhp, while CO2 emissions are down and economy is improved across the range, with all engines now meeting the latest Euro 6 emissions standards. Elsewhere, new paint choices are also available, alongside new alloy wheel designs and LED fog lights.

The new Countryman range is set to reach the UK this summer after its debut at this week’s New York motor show. The Paceman is also expected to get the same changes.

Mini says the Countryman is "an important pillar of growth" for the brand, with global sales of more than 350,000 units.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible

The new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 convertible has made its world debut at the New York motor show today. It’s the open-top sibling to the Z06 coupé, which was shown in Detroit earlier this year.
This is the first fully developed convertible version of the modern, hardcore-performance Corvette, but it isn’t the first soft-top Z06. In 1963, the Z06 package was first offered on the Corvette for endurance racing. 199 examples were thus fitted, but only one was a convertible. It’s taken more than 50 years for a follow up.

There is very little difference between the new Z06 coupé and convertible. The C7 Corvette’s aluminum chassis was already 20 per cent stiffer than the C6 Z06, so no structural changes were needed for the convertible. The weight is nearly identical and the chassis tuning is unchanged. Track-focused Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres as well as carbon-ceramic brakes are available, as are three different aerodynamic packages.

The supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine powering the convertible is said to have “at least” 625bhp and, just like the coupe, buyers can choose between a seven-speed manual or eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmissions.

The Z06’s powerered top can be lowered via the key fob at speeds up to 30mph. It continues the classic Corvette “waterfall” look, with a body-color insert behind the seats carrying the exterior color inside the cabin. Due to the lack of rear quarter panels, the differential and transmission cooler air intakes were moved to underneath the car.

As with the standard Corvette, the Z06 will only be offered in left-hand drive. The Z06 coupe will go on sale in the US in December, with the convertible following next June. Depending on demand, limited units of the convertible may also be sold in the UK, though it's likely to be some time before any models reach this country.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Hyundai Sonata

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata has made its public debut at the New York motor show. The car features Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language, last seen on the new Genesis in Detroit. Hyundai says the language has three main themes: fluid aesthetics, modern looks and a premium ambiance.

The Sonata is the American version of Britain’s i40. This is the seventh generation of the mid-size saloon and will be built at the company’s production facility in the state of Alabama in the US. It goes on sale in America this summer.

Its new design contributes to an impressive drag coefficient of 0.27. That’s the lowest of any non-hybrid in the mid-size class, according to Hyundai. The company quotes an improvement of 41 per cent in torsional rigidity, helped by the use of high-strength steel.

Inside, the level of interior space classifies the Sonata as a ‘large car’ by the EPA, the US agency in charge of fuel economy and emissions. The passenger volume inside the Hyundai is larger than its key competition from Japan, America, and Germany.

Hyundai has fitted a range of safety and technology features to the large interior. Radar cruise control, blind spot detection, and rear cross traffic alert are all available. DAB radio, Bluetooth, and full iPod integration are standard. Navigation and a 400-watt Infinity premium audio system are optional. If you specify satellite navigation, Apple’s “Eyes Free” Siri integration is also fitted. For even further iPhone integration, Apple’s CarPlay will be made available later in the year.

Power comes for the choice of two petrol engines, both hitched to a standard six-speed automatic. The naturally aspirated 2.4-litre in-line four-cylinder develops 185bhp. Also available is a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit. The boosted setup puts out 245bhp and 265lb ft of torque.
Both engines are retuned versions of the outgoing engines. Both are tweaked for better drivability at lower RPMs but, as a result, they do lose a small amount of peak power. We also expect to see a hybrid Sonata in the near future.

Like Hyundai models in the UK, the Sonata is offered with an industry-leading warranty in the USA (including a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty).

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition

Ford has revealed a limited 50th anniversary edition of the new Mustang at the New York motor show.

The special car, based on the Mustang GT fastback, will come in a choice of white or blue colours. Just 1964 examples will be sold, a homage to the original Mustang's launch year.

Styling upgrades over the standard car include extra chrome trim on the exterior, new tail light housings, and a unique badge at the rear denoting its rarity. Elsewhere, the special Mustang features lowered three-quarter windows, another hark to the 1965 original.

Inside, Ford has upgraded the Mustang's cabin with special aluminium trim alongside new badging, stitching and a new steering wheel. The seats feature the Mustang 50th anniversary logo, while bespoke floor mats are also fitted.

Using the same 5.0-litre V8 engine as the GT and fitted with Ford's performance pack, the 50th anniversary Mustang has 414bhp and 390lb ft of torque available. Performance brakes and special 19-inch alloys are also fitted, alongside performance tyres.

Models will come with either an automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. If choosing the manual option, customers will also get a limited-slip rear differential.

Production of the 50th anniversary Mustang will get underway later this year, with sales starting in the US this autumn. It's unlikely the new car will come to the UK.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Infiniti Q70

Infiniti’s recent badge-changing strategy means its mid-size saloon has become the Q70, rather than the M35. A year after the name change, a revised Q70 makes its debut at the 2014 New York motor show.

The new model sports an updated exterior design and a long-wheelbase version will be offered - a natural move for Infinti as lengthened versions of the Mercedes E-class and BMW 5-series are sold in markets like China. The long-wheelbase Q70 gains 150mm, resulting in a claimed best-in-class rear knee room as well as excellent ingress and egress.

In the USA, the Q70 carries over its two petrol engines, as well the hybrid powertrain. All-wheel drive is offered on all models except the hybrid. The Q70 3.7 utilises a 330bhp V6. The Q70 5.6 gets a 420bhp V8. The hybrid is a combination of a 3.5-litre V6 and an electric motor. All engines feature a seven-speed automatic transmission.

The petrol V6 and hybrid are likely to be offered in the UK, as well as a 3.0-litre diesel engine, but there is no confirmation on a long-wheelbase being offered.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Chevrolet Cruze

The updated Chevrolet Cruze saloon has made its debut at the New York Motor Show today. The focus of the revised model is on exterior styling and technology.

Outside, the minor changes mimic the American market’s latest Impala and Malibu saloon. LED daytime running lights are fitted to higher-spec Cruze models. A new front fascia, including revised headlights, is also included.

The biggest Cruze news, however, comes with its connectivity. A seven-inch color touchscreen is standard in the USA, as is voice recognition and a 4G LTE wireless connection with a wi-fi hotspot. Enhanced Bluetooth integration features text message alerts. The newest Cruze also offers Apple’s Siri Eyes Free, for full voice control of a connected iPhone. Chevrolet’s App Store allows owners to download weather, news, travel, and other information.

Two petrol engines - a 1.8-litre and a turbocharged four-cylinder in-line 1.4-litre unit - as well as a 2.0-litre diesel engine carry over in the US market. There's no confirmation of specific changes to the two 1.7-litre diesel engines presently offered on Cruze models in UK.

Chevrolet has sold more than 2.5 million Cruze models worldwide since its launch in 2010, making it their best-selling model. The revised 2015 version goes on sale later this year. However, company officials have confirmed the new model will not go on sale in the UK, due to Chevrolet's plans to pull out of Europe by 2015.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Acura TLX

The definitive production version of the Acura TLX has been revealed at the New York motor show. A near-production concept of the Japanese saloon was shown off at the Detroit motor show at the start of this year.

Two engines are offered in the TLX, both naturally aspirated and petrol. The 2.4-litre inline-four develops 206bhp and puts its power to the front wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a torque converter.

The 3.5-litre V6 has 290bhp and is hitched to a conventional nine-speed automatic. Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system is optional on the V6 and the technology is said to be 25 per cent lighter compared to previous versions.

All TLX models receive standard four-wheel steering, coined Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) by Acura. The system was launched on their flagship RLX saloon last year. The trick setup of P-AWS is the ability for each rear wheel to be independently controlled. P-AWS is said to only add 5kg of weight to the car.

The Honda-owned brand said it has worked hard to make the TLX quiet and solid. It features improvements in body structure and utilises electronic active noise control.

The TLX features a large array of safety technologies including collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a blind spot indicator system.

The TLX is Acura’s midsize luxury offering. It sits above the compact ILX and below the larger RLX. The TLX will replace both the TSX and TL when it goes on sale in the USA later this year.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2014 Mazda MX-5 Special Edition

Mazda has unveiled a modified version of the current MX-5 roadster at the New York motor show to celebrate the model’s 25th anniversary, which fell on the 14 February this year.

The core changes are in the engine, which has been built up with hand-selected parts. Components including the flywheel, connecting rods and pistons have been specially chosen from the standard production batches.

Mazda says that the company engineers have selected the “best of the best… lightest and best balanced” parts for the 25th Anniversary engines. The claim is that these 2.0-litre units will “rev even more freely, delivering extraordinary response and acceleration”. The special model gets 165bhp, while the six-speed auto version gets 156bhp

Inside, the latest MX-5 has off-white leather seats - with a 25th Anniversary logo and stitching - and door trims, special stainless kickplates, aluminum pedals, 17-inch gunmetal grey alloy wheels and Bilstein dampers on the manual-transmission version. The car comes in one colour, Soul Red metallic, with contrasting black A-pillars.

There’s no news on prices or availability for the UK as yet.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Subaru Outback

The new Subaru Outback has made its debut at the New York motor show. Following on from the launch of the all-new Legacy saloon in Chicago earlier this year, the Outback is billed as a more rugged estate version of the Legacy.

Subaru quotes a ground clearance of 22cm, which it claims is superior to some crossover SUVs. The Outback’s doorsills have been changed to a low step-in design, aiding entry and exit. Cargo and passenger space is slightly improved, with rear seatback releases added to the cargo area.

Only US-market Outback details were released in New York, with the engine line-up including the choice of a 175bhp 2.5-litre flat-four or a 256bhp 3.6-litre flat-six petrol units. They are both solely hitched to a CVT automatic transmission. As before, all-wheel drive is standard. We expect Subaru’s latest 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel to be the engine of choice in the UK.

On the chassis side, suspension has been tuned for both improved handling and increased ride comfort. The power steering features a quicker ratio and is now electric. The brakes have been enlarged and the rear discs are now vented.

Subaru’s focus on safety continues on the latest Outback. Blind spot detection, lane change assistant, and rear cross traffic alert are available as part of the Rear Vehicle Detection System.

Also offered is the company’s latest EyeSight driver-assist system, which uses stereo cameras and integrates lane departure warning, pre-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control technology.

Expect the latest Outback to go on sale later this year, with full UK specifications released closer to its launch date.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Dodge Challenger

Dodge continues to play the retro card with the significantly updated Challenger two-door coupé, shown at the New York motor show. The top-spec model is called the Challenger 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker, is fitted with a 478bhp, 350lb ft 6.4-litre V8 and features an exposed engine cover that visually shakes with the motor.

The new model features a split grille and taillights as well as a host of 1970s colours, including Sublime Green, B5 Blue, and TorRed. LED running lights, xenon headlights, and 20-inch wheels are also offered.

The cabin includes a configurable TFT screen and an analogue speedometer and tachometer. Two available versions of Chrysler’s Uconnect touchscreen handle the infotainment duties. The driver-focused centre console houses either the six-speed manual shifter or the selector for a ZF 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Other available features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning with rear path detection, and forward collision warning.

Dodge claims a 0-60mph of around 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 182mph for the HEMI Scat Pack Shaker model. The Challenger is also offered with Chrysler’s latest 3.6-litre Pentastar petrol V6 with 305bhp or a 5.7-litre V8 with 375bhp.

The Challenger’s LC platform traces its basic chassis components back to the Mercedes-derived Chrysler LX platform, first launched in 2005 with the Chrysler 300C. New for 2015 is electric power steering. Dodge also offers the new Super Track Pak on all models which includes performance suspension, upgraded brakes, steering changes, shorter final drive ratio, and Goodyear F1 summer performance tyres.

Sales begin in the USA in the third quarter of 2014. Like the new Charger, no UK sales are currently planned.

NY Show 2014 Highlights: 2015 Dodge Charger

The 2015 Dodge Charger, shown at the New York motor show, has received a significant set of revisions, with the majority of body panels replaced and a new interior.

LED lighting has been added front and back and the cabin features a customisable TFT digital gauge cluster and revised centre stack with touchscreen infotainment systems.

The basic setup of the Charger is classic front engine, rear-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. Buyers have the choice of a 3.6-litre V6 or 5.7-litre V8. All-wheel drive is optional with the V6 engine. The V8 develops 370bhp while the V6 puts out 292bhp, or 300bhp with the optional Rallye Appearance Group.

The Charger R/T (Road and Track) features a V8 engine, a shorter final drive and a recalibrated computer with specific engine and transmission settings. Dodge claims a 0-60mph time in the high 5.0sec range.

The updated Chrysler LX platform includes new electric power steering and lighter axles. The all-wheel drive system features an active transfer case with a front-axle disconnect system, which improves fuel economy.

Like the Challenger, a large pallet of colours can be had both inside and out the Charger. Six different 20-inch wheel designs are available, too.

There are no plans for the model to be imported into the UK.

Spied: 2015 Mercedes B-Class

These are the first pictures of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz B-class, which is expected to go on sale at the end of this year following its debut at the Paris motor show in October.

This model was seen benchmark testing against the current B-class, as well as a seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf.

Although only a minor facelift, new styling details include new headlight graphics, a more prominent front grille and a refreshed front bumper, which can be seen in these pictures. New taillight graphics also appear at the rear of the B-class, alongside a new rear bumper and new exhaust designs.

No changes are expected in the B-class's engine line-up, meaning the new model will likely come with the same range of 1.4, 1.8 and 2.1-litre diesel options as the current car, alongside 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrols.

Those engines could be supplied with minor modifications to improve fuel economy and CO2 emissions. The cleanest version of the current B-class, the 180 CDi ECO, emits 98g/km of CO2 and returns 74.3mpg on a combined cycle.

While some reports suggest Mercedes could offer a hybrid variant of the B-class with a three-cylinder engine in the future, it's unlikely since the production version of the B-class Electric Drive has been confirmed as arriving early next year.

As well as the updated B-class, Mercedes has previously confirmed it will also introduce a facelifted version of the CLS this autumn.

Spied: 2016 Mercedes M-Class

Our spy photographers in Stuttgart have caught a heavily camouflaged Mercedes M-Class heading out for testing.

With the recent launch of the latest BMW X5 and a new Audi Q7 due to be unveiled at the end of the year, Mercedes is giving its premium SUV a facelift for 2015 to help it keep up with the competition.

Radical changes are planned both inside and out, with these pictures showing a new front fascia, including a single-bar grille and what appears to be slimmer headlights. In profile, the M-Class doesn’t look that different, although the sills have been revised and the wheel arches are less aggressively styled.

The rear bumper has also been updated, whereas the taillights are undisguised here – suggesting they could be carried over for 2015.

What these images don’t tell us is how Mercedes plans to shake things up under the bonnet.
Alongside retuned versions of the M-Class’ existing powertrains, we should see a new hybrid model to help combat the forthcoming Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid. There’s also likely to be a ML 400 variant, featuring a bi-turbo 3-litre V6, which will slot between the 350 AMG Sport and range-topping 63 AMG.

It’s likely the M-Class will be unveiled fully later this year, with prices and specs confirmed shortly after. For more details click here.

Spied: 2015 Opel/Vauxhall Corsa

Vauxhall has dropped its biggest hint yet that the new Corsa to be introduced later this year will be more than just a facelift. Spied wearing a full body disguise for the first time, Vauxhall will give the Corsa a complete new look and interior overhaul. We should see the new model showcased at the Paris Motor Show in September.

This brings an end to speculation that the supermini would only be receiving a minor facelift for 2014, although the model will be based on the same platform as the outgoing model.

As these images confirm, the new-look front end continues to evoke the Adam. Just like the city car, a single chrome bar cuts across the wide, low-set grille, with the centrally mounted Vauxhall badge expanded, too.

A slight crease running down the middle of the bonnet further echoes the brand’s current design language, however the wrap-around headlights appear to have been redesigned for the Corsa.

Previous test cars have been snapped with the same doors and tail end as the current model but these latest shots appear to conceal a higher waistline and chunkier rear.

Most notably, the taillights now seem to stretch onto the boot lid and are linked by a pronounced ridge running across the back of the car.

In terms of performance, there’ll be a range of new engines for the Corsa, including a 113bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine shared with the Adam, the Cascada’s 1.6-litre petrol and Vauxhall’s new 1.6 CDTi diesel that’ll emit under 100g/km of CO2. For more details click here.

Sneak Peek: 2015 Subaru Outback

The all-new 2015 Subaru Outback will make its debut in a few weeks at the New York auto show, which isn’t surprising when you consider the many prototypes caught testing on public roads in recent months. Subaru made the announcement today and released a few teaser photos of the fifth-generation 2015 Outback.

One photo reveals a slightly muddy wheel and front rocker panel adorned with an “Outback” badge. As we’ve seen from the spy shots, the Outback will retain its familiar wagon shape and its high ground clearance to make it a relatively capable off-roader. As the second teaser shot reveals, the new Outback should feature many of the styling details already revealed on the 2015 Subaru Legacy sedan, including its larger front grille and sleeker headlights. With the new Legacy looking rather tame and safe, the new Outback should also adopt an overall conservative appearance.

Sneak Peek: 2015 Kia MPV

Kia is aiming to make the minivan cool again (was it ever cool?) at this year's New York International Auto Show. The first official teaser of the next-gen 2015 Kia Sedona has hit the web, and based on looks alone the new Sedona appears like it will completely shake up the segment.

Kia's new Sedona teaser (note -- it doesn't actually say this is the new Sedona, but read between the lines) confirms that the good-looking minivan we spotted testing last summer is in fact Kia's follow-up to the dowdy previous-gen people-mover. The next-gen Sedona looks to get Kia's sharp new design treatment complete with a Tiger Nose grille, sharp body line creases, and the stepped window line that the prototypes had.
Kia says its new minivan will be able to seat up to eight passengers (likely if the second-row bench is selected), while "also serving as a purposeful offering for adventure seekers." We're expecting the 2015 Kia Sedona to be powered by the Kia Cadenza's 3.3-liter V-6, which makes a healthy 293 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque.

Sneak Peek: 2015 Lexus NX

The Lexus LF-NX concept polarized audiences when it debuted in Frankfurt last year, and now Lexus is readying the production crossover for its unveiling in Beijing on April 20. Based on a shadowy teaser image Lexus has distributed, it appears many of the concept's design cues will transfer to the production NX.

The NX wears Lexus' new familial face, which includes the wide-mouthed spindle grille and Nike Swoosh-shaped LED daytime running lights. A shadow prevents us from seeing whether the production NX retains the large vent ahead of the front fender, but it appears the sides have been toned down from the concept's aggressive box-fendered look. We can't see any of the crossover's rear details, so we'll have to wait for more teaser shots to find out whether the LF-NX concept's angular, vent-laden rump carries over.
Lexus doesn't give any hints as to what will power the NX, only saying that the compact crossover will "make use of advanced technologies [and] set new standards for other future Lexus models." When Lexus showed the concept a second time in Tokyo, it sported a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine.

Rumors: Subaru is Considering Impreza/WRX Hatchback

Enthusiasts who've decried the lack of a hatchback variant for the 2015 Subaru WRX may just get their wish. According to reports out of Australia, Subaru is seriously considering bringing back the hatchback WRX due to strong demand here in the United States.

Speaking with Australia's, Subaru's WRX project general manager Masuo Takatsu told the outlet that a five-door 2015 WRX hatchback was still under consideration. "We have received strong interest from the U.S., where the hatchback was 50 percent [of previous-generation WRX] sales, so we're now considering [a new hatchback]," Takatsu said.
When we contacted Subaru of America for comment regarding the return of the WRX hatch, a spokesman told us the U.S. arm was in the dark. "We do not know about, nor do we have, any plans for a WRX hatch," the spokesman said, "Takatsu San is the product general manager of the WRX, but this is not something he has discussed with us."
Nevertheless, with North America being Subaru's largest market for the new WRX (followed by Japan, then Australia), strong consumer demand in the 'States could be just what Subaru needs to get funding for a WRX wagon. When the 2015 WRX was launched, Subaru told us that the reason it only offers a sedan was because it only had so much money to develop the new WRX and WRX STI, and rather than splitting the budget, it wanted to spend more on making the WRX stand apart from the Impreza it's based on.
As for what a new Subaru WRX hatch (and WRX STI hatch) could look like, picture a slightly-shorter version of the Subaru Levorg wagon concept. If the Subaru WRX hatchback makes it off the drawing board, we'd expect to see it on the streets by 2017 at the earliest.
