2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country

Volvo revealed its latest experiment in car (sorry, this time isn’t a new safety tech). Its new car named, S60 Cross Country. S60? No, you don’t read a wrong name and I didn’t type a wrong name. Yeah, seems like Volvo is trying to explore further with its Cross Country after V70 Cross Country made success and has created a new segment. The carmaker said that it was the first premium sedan which had the same level of capability and rugged design cues of its Cross Country wagons.

The engineer increase its height of 65 mm and featured All-Wheel Drive system. But in Europe and selected countries, the S60 Cross Country will also be available in front wheel drive. The mid-size sedan is offered with 18-inch and 19-inch wheels with high profile tyres. Volvo claims that the tyre improves comfort and all-road capabilities and also reducing road noise. For the powertrain, Volvo offers 2.0 liter 5-cylinder petrol engine with turbo and produces 250 hp. There’s a diesel engine choice 4-cylinder D4 produces 187 hp. Later, Volvo is going to add another engine choice, D4 diesel 5-cylinder 2.4 liter.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE Concept

Once again, Volkswagen (VW) previews its mid-size crossover for US market at 2015 NAIAS. This time, the German automaker unveiled Cross Coupe GTE Concept. The concept car that’s built on MQB platform has 4,846 mm long, 2,029 mm wide, and 1,735 mm tall. It has an exterior design which is almost the same with two previous VW’s concept cars, CrossBlue and CrossBlue Coupe. But it only can take 5 passengers.

The four-door SUV concept comes with hybrid powertrain. Its conventional engine is VR6 petrol 3.6 liter produces 276 hp and accompanied by 54-hp electric motor in front and 114 hp electric motor in rear. Total horsepower that it can produce is about 355 hp and the top speed is 209 km/h. Driver can activate ‘E-Mode’ that enables shutting down the VR6 engine and let the 114-hp electric motor moves the car up to 32 km.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Mercedes GLE

2016 Mercede GLE comes up at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. Like what I’ve said in previous post, for me it’s still an awkward car. It’s like Mercedes stole the BMW X6’s styling. You can see it from the its body line. Up front, Mercedes designer puts sporty design with headlights which reminds me to other latest Mercedes models. From side, it looks too high for GLE and make it even more awkward. At the back side, we can see a la S-Class Coupe tailights which doesn’t seem suitable.

Inside, Mercedes presents luxury design with high quality material. Sporty look is seen from 3-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, and using carbon fiber in some areas. Under the hood, there’s a V6 3.0 liter engine produces 362 hp and mated with 9-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes’ all-wheel-drive system, 4Matic.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Audi Q7

Audi officially revealed the new 2016 Q7 at 2015 NAIAS. The second generation gets big changes. The big news is now Q7 is lighter about 325 kg than its predecessor, thanks to aluminum that’s used some parts of its body structure. Audi said that now doors, front fenders, hood, and tailgate were made from aluminum. Its new dimension is slightly shorter and narrower than the old Q7. But the company claims that the cabin is longer and offers more headroom. Moreover, the interior design is nice and looked modern with high-quality material.

Unfortunately, the exterior design is not like what I expected before that will have a spectacular design. It’s a plain design even though it comes with latest Audi design language. The new Q7 is more like bigger Q3. For the engines choice, Audi offers 3.0 liter V6 petrol engine with supercharged produces 328 hp and 440 Nm of torque. For diesel lover, there’s a V6 3.0 liter powertrain which produces 268 hp and 600 Nm of torque. Both of those engines are mated to 8-speed automatic transmission. For Asian market, Audi will offer 4-cylinder engine 2.0 liter TFSI produces 248 hp and 370 Nm of torque.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Lincoln MKX

Ford’s luxury brand, Lincoln introduced its new crossover, MKX. Following the launched of its sibling, Ford Edge last year, Lincoln is ready for the luxury version. According to the automakers, New MKX is the most powerful, best handling, best riding, and the quietest thanks to the available of EcoBoost 2.7 liter engine, integral rear link suspension, and upgraded body structure and chassis components. Under the hood, Lincoln immerses EcoBoost twin-turbocharged 2.7 liter V6 produces 330 hp and 501 Nm of torque, or standard machine V6 3.7 liter V6 delivers 300 hp and 379 Nm of torque. Both of the engines are mated to 6-speed automatic tramssion with push button shift and SelectShift.

MKX is the first Lincoln that is featured adaptive steering and high-end Revel audio system. Another isnteresting feature is Lincoln Drive Control that optimize performance and offer three driving mode:Normal, Sport, and Comfort. The car’s exterior and interior design is almost the same with its smaller sibling, MKC.

2016 Lincoln MKX will be launched at USA this fall, followed by other markets, such as China, South Korea, Mexico, and Middle East right after that.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Cadillac CTS-V

Cadillac warms Cobo Center floor with its latest high-performance sedan, 2016 CTS-V. The car that will make Audi RS6, BMW M5, and Mercedes E63 AMG freak out. Because it is powered by Corvette Z06 machine, LT4 V8 6.2 liter produces 640 hp and 855 Nm of torque and making it as the fastest Cadillac ever made and the quickest one in the executive sedan segment. Furthermore, it can run from 0 to 100 km/h 3.7 seconds and its top speed is 322 km/h. The beast comes with 8-speed automatic transmission (Sorry there’s no manual transmission option for ya).

The automaker features the four-door sedan with two-piece Recaro seats, 4G LTE connectivity, Bose Stereo, Siri Eyes Free, and Performance Data Recorder which enables driver to upload your performance on the road to social media.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: Buick Avenir Concept

If you get bored with 2016 Cascada, another world premiere maybe will make you smile. Yeah, Buick made a surprise at this year NAIAS revealing its newest concept car, named Avenir. It’s French means ‘future’. I don’t know whether it previews the future design language of Buick or not. But the concept car is perfectly beautiful and I hope it would be a flagship car in future. Avenir was developed by Buick’s global team and inspired by its previous concept cars, like Riviera.

Up front, there are LED headlights which has neat design. The grille comes with new design, combining Buick’s traditional waterfall and wing-shaped element. An interesting thing that we can find is the return of tri-shield insignia Buick’s logo with three-color; red, silver, and blue. Let’s hope it could be a new identity of Buick in future. Inside, the white color dominates its cabin combining with wood accent which makes it looked elegant and roomy. Under the hood, there’s a next generation V6 engine with Active Fuel Management and mated with 9-speed automatic transmission.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Buick Cascada

The Buick’s version of Opel Cascada finally unveiled at 2015 NAIAS, named…. Buick Cascada. It’s a re-badge actually. It comes with same exterior and interior design like its twin in Europe. The different is only in logo. What a shame. I expected that Buick would do a little change. So it will be looked more American and blended with its waterfall grille.

The Cascada comes with 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine produces 200 hp and 280 Nm of torque. The powertrain is mated with 6-speed automatic transmission. The soft top takes 17 seconds to drop and the driver can do it while driving at speed up to 50 km/h. It is featured 7-inch touch screen, Buick OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Lexus GS F

Lexus takes another step to fight with the Germans. At this year’s NAIAS, it showed off the long-rumor GS F to the world. Just like what previous rumors told us, the GS F is ordered to go head to head with Audi RS6, BMW 5, the latest Cadillac CTS-V, Jaguar XFR-S, and Mercedes E63 AMG. It’s not an easy job to beat them. Moreover, it comes with a naturally-aspirated engine from RC F, V8 5.0 liter. The powertrain has 467 hp at 7,100 rpm and 527 Nm of torque at 4,800 – 5,600 rpm. It is mated with 8-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting.

On paper, the GS F can’t chase its rivals which have more powerful engine. The M5 has 552 hp, the E63 AMG comes with 550 hp, and the Caddy CTS-V produces 640 hp. But Lexus GS F is lighter than its competitors. According to the automaker, the 4-door luxury sedan is 1,830 kg of weight. It means that it is lighter than BMW M5, Mercedes E63 AMG, and the fastest one Cadillac CTS-V. I don’t know whether its weight could be effect to beat its rival on the track.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: Infiniti Q60 Concept

At 2015 NAIAS, Infiniti introduced a new concet car, named Q60. This is a sport coupe that previews a new coupe from Nissan’s luxury division. Overall, it has a nice looking exterior design. Some of exterior elements borrowed from other Infiniti models. The low roofline and aerodynamic gills behind the front wheel arches were taken from Q80 Inspiration Concept and Q50 Eau Rouge Concept. I hope Infiniti designer won’t do much changes when developing the production version of Q60 Concept.

Inside, Q60 comes with high quality interior material and design. According to Infiniti, the cabin features impeccable hand-stitched leather and precise treatment of the carbon fiber accents. A common problem about coupe cars is rear passenger seats. Some automakers have released coupe cars with limited legroom for rear passenger causing it can be sit by children. But Infiniti claims that Q60 is goinng to have more legroom and will feel comfortable.

Under the hood, there’s a V6 twin turbo engine 3.0 liter. It is mated to 7-speed automatic transmission. Infiniti plans to unveil the new Q60 next year.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel

After driving alone, finally Ford F-150 Raptor will have a rival. At 2015 NAIAS, Ram surprisingly unveiled 1500 Rebel. Yes, this is a serious contender for Raptor. 1500 Rebel is made for those who likes going off-road with trucks. It features air suspension so the driver can increase its height to support their outdoor activity. Its exterior design gets some changes. Ram removed the cross-hair grille and replace it blacked-out and add silver ‘RAM’ emblem. Other changes including black headlights that’s integrated with LED Daytime Running Lights.

Under the hood, Ram 1500 Rebel has Pentastar V6 3.6 liter produces 305 hp or HEMI V8 5.7 liter produces 395 hp. Both of engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The truck will go on sale early in the second half of 2015.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor

The Blue Oval company, Ford showed off the latest F-150 Raptor which is to be released in 2016. Like its previous model, the company offers faster and tougher F-150. It packs with EcoBoost engine V6 twin turbo 3.5 liter. Ford hasn’t released yet the details of its performance. They just told us that it will have more power than current Raptor which has 411 hp from V8 6.2 liter. Moreover, the powertrain is linked with an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission! Insane!

Based-on regular F-150, makes the next generation Raptor is lighter 227 kg, thanks to aluminum body. The automaker put an all-new 4 wheel drive system, torque-on-demand transfer case, and Torsen front differential. Ford designer redesigned its exterior design. So, it has more aggressive and meaner face. For the first time, Ford put dual-exhaust and 17-inch wheel.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Nissan Titan

After we’ve got some video teasers about ‘Truckementary’, finally Nissan revealed the second generation of Titan at 2015 Detroit Auto Show. For the first time, Nissan introduced the Titan XD that is positioned between half-ton trucks and Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The company said that XD will be the first Titan to go on sale this year and other models will follow after that. The latest Titan has a good exterior design. Up front, we can see a big grille with honeycomb motive. It accompanies the LED headlights which is integrated with LED Daytime Running Lights. Unfortunately, when I see Titan for the first time, it reminds me of latest Ford F-150. In the rear, the designer put a clean and simple design. The taillights design makes Titan looked elegant.

Inside, Nissan presents a cool design with high-quality material. Under the hood, Titan XD brings Cummins Diesel engine V8 5.0 liter turbo diesel. The engine can produce 310 hp and 752 Nm of torque and mated with 6-speed automatic transmission. Cummins Diesel only available exclusively for XD. According to Nissan, other models will get V6 and V8 engines.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota introduced its latest generation of Tacoma. The third generation comes with everything’s new from the outside and the inside. The exterior design reminds me of 4Runner, unique and contemporary. But I think it’s not everyone’s taste. From side, there are bulge fenders that makes Tacoma more muscular than its predecessor and rivals. Inside, the truck has the same design with its big bro, Tundra. There are new dashboard design, dual-zone air conditioning, and a large touchscreen for the infotainment system.

In order to fight with Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, Toyota engineers added high strength steel to enhance rigidity and overall strength. Its suspensions was re-tuned so that it could be smoother on-road driving and more capable off-road. Tacoma is powered by 4-cylinder 2.7 liter from the previous model and an all-new engine V6 3.5 liter with Atkinson cycle. The four-cylinder engine is mated with new 6-speed automatic transmission, and the V6 will also be available with 6-speed manual transmission.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: Ford GT Concept

The rumor about GT has spread some time ago. Fortunately, that’s not a bullshit. It’s real! The GT is a perfect surprise for journalists who reported NAIAS. Ford describes GT Concept as ‘an ultra high-performance supercar’. Just like GT350R, the company using the concept car to show off latest EcoBoost performance, aerodynamic, and light-weight carbon fiber construction.

In order to save weight, Ford engineers using carbon fiber and aluminum which could make car has better acceleration and handling. From the exterior, we can see GT comes up with retro design like its predecessor. But it looks sportier and more dynamic. The coupe has 20-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 that’s specifically designed for Ford GT. In the interior, you can find two-seat which is integrated directly to carbon fiber cell. The designer presents F1-inspired style steering wheel which looks unique.

Under the hood, there’s an EcoBoost V6 3.5L twin turbo. There’s no confirmation from Ford about its horse power. The automaker just said that it has more than 600 hp. Making it the most powerful EcoBoost ever built. It is mated with 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Ford GT will go on sale next year at the same time with 50th celebrate Ford’s victory at 24 Hours of LeMans competition. I’m so happy Ford finally back to muscle car segment and has a plan to release New GT next year. Seems like everyone are excited about it.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R

The name of GT350 isn’t a new thing. Back to 1965, when Ford and Caroll Shelby developed a race car based-on Mustang which is lighter, faster, and had a better suspension. And it’s become iconic Mustangs. And now, Ford’s bringing back the name (and add ‘R’ letter). With this muscle car, Ford wants to introduce its latest innovation in aerodynamics, chassis engineering, and light-weight construction sectors.

The two-door car is the first Ford which comes with naturally aspirated and flat-plane crankshaft V8 engine. The engine capacity is 5.2L with more than 500 hp and over 542 Nm of torque. In technical sector, Ford dropped its weight around 130 pounds. The engineers have removed air conditioning, audio system, rear seats, carpet, backup camera, emergency tire sealer, and inflator. But if you wanted more comfort when drive it, Ford offers optional the dual-zone air conditioning, 8-inch touchscreen, seven speakers audio system, and turn signal mirror.

The Chevy Camaro Z/28 rival, has revised spring rates and antiroll bars. Outside, Ford has thrown off its logo and replaced it with snake-ready-to-bite Shelby emblem on the grille. It looks more aggressive than the regular Mustang because the designer has added front skirt and honeycomb grille. The side skirt, big spoiler, rear diffuser, and four mufflers make GT350R even more dynamic. In the cabin, you’ll see white stitching seats, Shelby logo on steering wheel, and more.

2016 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R will go on sale in Canada and USA later this year. And for your information, this car is street legal, too. So, you can drive around town with this beast.

2015 NAIAS Highlights: 2016 Acura NSX

Finally! Yeah finally, Honda revealed the production version of its legend and the off and the on project, NSX. At 2015 North America International Auto Show (NAIAS), Acura announced that it will go on sale this year. And it will be produced in the United States with its price around $150,000.

The all-new NSX is a mid-engine hybrid sport car which will compete the conventional supercars. It’s powered by Sport Hybrid Power Unit mated with twin-turbo mid-mounted DOHC V6. The coupe comes with 9-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and three electric motors. There are two electric motors in front which drives front wheels and makes instantaneous torque and dynamic distribution. Meanwhile, there’s a motor electric motor in rear that supports accelerating, braking, and transmission shifting. Unfortunately, Acura hasn’t released the official number about its horse power, how fast it can reach 100 km/h, and its maximum speed.

From under the hood, it’s time to see the exterior sector. Up front, it’s almost identical with the concept version. Now, the headlights comes with black accent. Honeycomb grille and bulge line in C-pillar make NSX looked aggressive and muscular. Rear, we’ll find nice looking and neat design. For me, it looks nice with LED tailights and rear diffuser.

Overall, 2016 Acura NSX looks great from its design until its mechanical (even though Acura and Honda haven’t released the details spec, but it seems promising for car enthusiasts). I expect to see the 2016 Honda NSX at 2015 Geneva Motor Show next March.
